Farmland LP is a farmland investment management firm that buys conventional, chemical-based farms in California, Washington, and Oregon and converts them into farms that adhere to organic and regenerative principles. Farmland’s regenerative practices improve soil health, boost yields, sequester carbon, improve water and food quality, and increase biodiversity. Converting farmland can be a difficult sell because absentee farmland owners experience lower or no rental income during the three-year organic conversion period, and tenant farmers do not benefit from the increased land value and experience diminished cash flows during transition. Farmland’s acquisition, conversion, and management business model distinguishes the company from others in farming who aren’t incentivized to convert conventional farmland to organic because of these factors. Additionally, the current organic food demand far exceeds the supply of certified organic farmland, so Farmland is addressing this imbalance by converting conventional farms to organic. Customers of their farms include retailers like Whole Foods, Ralphs, and Costco, and commercial brands like Morning Star, Procter and Gamble, and Tillamook. Farmland also boasts the highest rating for global impact investments by Human Impact and Profit (HIP).
