About Distribution
Frequently Asked Questions
How does the Philanthropic Investment Grant (PHIG) program work?
Does the 99% have to go back to my DAF?
No, you can recommend that we donate 99% of returns to any 501(c)(3) nonprofit (your DAF, foundation or another organization you support). Or you can recommend that we use the returns to make another PHIG, or donate to one of our fiscally sponsored organizations.
Can I change my mind?
While we require that donor-investors recommend upfront where we should send 99% of returns, we realize that sometimes circumstances change. When returns are generated, we always confirm with the donor-investor the details of where they recommended we send them.
For example, if they have moved their donor-advised fund (DAF) to a different DAF sponsor, then we could send returns accordingly.
Can I recycle those funds into another investment?
Yes. If you have another investment recommendation to make, you can save time and effort by simply recommending that we recycle that capital into a new PHIG.
How long do distributions of returns take?
Once the total amount of returns from an investment reaches at least $2,500, we distribute them the following month.
Do I need to notify my DAF of the donation?
No. As the party making the donation, Realize Impact notifies the DAF sponsor of the incoming grant from us.
Has Realize Impact made distributions to _____?
Nearly every DAF sponsor we work with accepts third-party donations in connection with a previous grant. Two DAF sponsors have some particular requirements and eligibility criteria: Fidelity Charitable and National Philanthropic Trust. If your DAF is at either of these, contact us for more info.
Can I just leave the money at Realize Impact?
No. Realize Impact is not a DAF sponsor and does not manage donor accounts.
If you don’t want returns sent to your DAF, foundation, or another 501(c)(3), we ask that you recommend another PHIG, recommend that we donate the returns to one of our fiscally sponsored organizations, or recommend that Realize Impact uses the returns to support our operations.
