Recompose is a human composting company, which is a category within the funeral industry that Recompose itself has developed and created. The Recompose system mimics the decay process that occurs on the forest floor, where dead organic material degrades and transforms into soil. This company competes with traditional funeral practices that harm the planet. U.S. crematories emit 600 million pounds of CO2 per year and use fossil fuels like natural gas. Cemeteries not only require an abundance of land, but they waste raw materials like hardwood, steel, and concrete and require millions of gallons of embalming fluid every year. Alternatively, human composting requires ⅛ the energy of conventional burial or cremation. For every person who chooses Recompose over conventional burial or cremation, one metric ton of carbon dioxide is prevented from entering the atmosphere. One cubic yard of nutrient-rich soil is also produced for each client, yielding additional carbon benefit through new growth.

Recompose provides a ceremony before the body is placed in a composting vessel with plant material, where natural microbes break it down into nutrient-rich soil over about a month. After curing for an additional 2-5 weeks, the soil can be used by family and friends or donated to land conservation efforts. The design of Recompose vessels and the staff’s expertise ensure that the resulting soil is safe for use on plants and trees, thus contributing to the restoration of forests, sequestration of carbon, and nourishment of new life. The company’s business model unites retail funeral care, funeral planning sales (Precompose), wholesale channel partners, and the licensing of their brand and technology. Recompose’s Land Program is also included in the price of Recompose’s service and gives clients the opportunity to donate any amount of soil to nonprofit conservation organizations managing land restoration projects.
